The Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) is presiding over the Science20 (S20) Summit this week, a meeting of the scientific community from G20 countries.
On Monday (1st) and Tuesday (2nd), meetings will be held to finalize a document with science and technology recommendations to be delivered to G20 leaders and heads of government in November this year.
Five main topics will be addressed in the document to be debated by the summit:
- artificial intelligence;
- bioeconomy;
- energy transition process;
- health challenges;
- social justice.
The opening of the S20 summit was attended by Ambassador Mauricio Lyrio, G20 coordinator in Brazil, and Luis Fernandes, executive secretary of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI).
In addition to the G20 (a group composed of the 19 largest economies in the world, along with the European Union and the African Union), the Science20 (S20) was created in 2017 to act as the G20’s science and technology engagement group, working autonomously and independently from governments.
The S20 comprises the Academies of Sciences of the G20 to promote dialogue between the scientific community and policymakers.
The members of the S20 met in Rio de Janeiro in March and are now meeting again in July to discuss “Science for Global Transformation” and formulate viable recommendations and measures for the G20.
