G20 in Brazil: Science group will deliver final communique to the Brazilian government
FINAL COMMUNIQUE: OFFICIAL LAUNCH ON JULY 30th AT 2 PM
The final communique of the Science20 (S20), the G20’s science and technology engagement group, was signed by the presidents of the Science Academies of the countries that make up the group. The document will now be delivered to Ambassador Maurício Lyrio, the G20 Sherpa for Brazil, and Ambassador Tatiana Rosito, coordinator of the Finance Track. They will be responsible for presenting the recommendations to the heads of state and government of the G20, who will hold the Leaders’ Summit in November. The full text of the communique is already available and can be viewed here.
The text is the result of months of work by the scientific community of the countries that are part of the bloc.
The recommendations were consolidated during the S20 Summit meeting, held in Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of July. At the end of the meeting, the president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), Helena Nader, the S20 Sherpa, presented the main points of the communique at a press conference. According to Nader, Brazil is playing an important leadership role and can make a difference in the G20.
“Without science, there is no social justice. That’s why our theme was ‘Science for global transformation,’” she stated. She also advocated for the need to revive the 2030 Agenda, a global commitment made in 2015 to eradicate poverty and protect the environment: “In the preamble of the document, we state that to make the planet suitable for sustainable living, we urgently need to take measures aimed at implementing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We argue that among the most important is the eradication of poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, which is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development.”
Divided into five thematic areas—artificial intelligence, bioeconomy, energy transition process, health challenges, and social justice—the final communique brings the recommendations agreed upon by the S20 members.
The full recommendations can be viewed here.
