G20 Scientific Community Finalizes Document with Recommendations for Bloc Leaders
On July 1st and 2nd, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) will preside over the Summit of the 8th edition of Science20 (S20), the G20’s engagement group for science and technology, in Rio de Janeiro. Representatives of the bloc’s countries will prepare the final communiqué with recommendations from the scientific community for the G20 heads of state and government. The main points of the document will be presented at a press conference on Tuesday, July 2nd, at 6 PM, at the Windsor Hotel in Barra da Tijuca.
The theme of Science20 Brazil 2024 is “Science for Global Transformation.” The opening of the S20 Summit on July 1st at 9 AM will feature the presence of Ambassador Mauricio Lyrio, G20 Sherpa for Brazil, a representative from the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI), and other authorities. Accredited journalists will be able to follow the event. See the agenda here!
Led by ABC President Helena Nader, S20 sherpa, the two-day Summit meeting aims to consolidate the work that began at the first meeting held in March. At that time, the G20 scientific community discussed topics divided into five axes: artificial intelligence, bioeconomy, energy transition process, health challenges, and social justice.
Following the first meeting, representatives of the academies continued to debate in search of consensus. The goal of the Summit meeting is to prepare the text of the official communiqué of S20 Brazil 2024.
Representatives of the Academies of Sciences from South Africa, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, South Korea, the United States, France, Japan, India, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and the Academia Europaea, representing the European Union, will come to Brazil for the S20 Summit. International scientific organizations such as the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), International Science Council (ISC), Inter-American Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS), Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA), and the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) will also be present.
Organized by ABC, the S20 is financially supported by Finep and the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI).
